Historical Overview of the CMI

Milestones, Partnerships, Memberships and Affiliations

The CMI is the only IMO accredited maritime education and training Institute in the English-speaking Caribbean. The Institute is accredited for its Maritime Education and Training programmes in Nautical and Marine Engineering Studies. Jamaica’s inclusion on the International Maritime Organisation’s “White List” is recognition of CMI as an organization that complies with the Standards of Training, Certification and Watch Keeping STCW’95 as amended.

The CMI has established close relationships with the University of the West Indies, the University of Technology, University College of the Caribbean and Northern Caribbean University, through collaborative programmes.

The Institute has secured endorsements from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Caribbean Shipping Association (CSA) as the preferred institution for maritime education and training.

The Maritime Authority of Jamaica (MAJ) provides oversight responsibility for the Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping (STCW’95) courses offered by the School of Marine and Professional Studies. The United Kingdom Marine & Coast Guard Agency accepts Certificates of Competencies (COC) awarded by the School of Marine and Professional Studies as equivalent to its own. The School satisfies the competency requirements for service on UK registered ships and for entry into advanced training and examination in the UK Nautical Institutes.
